Can Search Engines Read Functions in Java Script ?

Thank author of this post/commentI am a webmaster and has read many times that search engines do not "read" java script. When someone places a redirect command in javascript, the page is redirected. Then how can search engines are able to interpret java script

They can read javascript because it is embedded in your html.

Do they interpret it? I think the answer is not fully, but I do think if you put in something like:

window.location = 'http://www.google.com'

They will easily process and understand your redirect. Do more complicated computations and its less clear.

If they wanted to expend the processing power there is no reason they couldn't fully execute all javascript on a page.

Why ask a question when you can investigate and discover the answer yourself. Doing that will increase your intelligence and your power over the competition.

On a page that is heavily trafficked by search engine bots, simple put in some javascript redirects of various forms, each to different destination URL's. URL's that are not linked to by anything, nor that you have ever viewed.

Then review your log files regularly and see which bots visit which of the URL's and you'll have your answer about search engines interpreting javascript.

I think you'll find Jimmy is correct they don't do a pure interpretation but a short hand interpretation.

Another aspect to ponder is that people claim that Google incorporate some aspect of social signals from Facebook in their algo. However, if you do a view source on facebook, you'll see that everything is burried in redirects and javascript. Do they actually plow through all that nonsense to get social signals?

Open your mind to all the possibilities and test them out yourself. Or, visit SEO forums for all the best disinformation in the world!
