| Books I have several books on website design but nothing really good on CSS. I'd like to learn to design whole page layouts usign CSS entirely including the placement of the page elements. Until now I've basically used Dreamweaver's CSS facilities to format text etc. but I want to take it the next level. Any advice as to where to look? Any titles to recommend? |
| My attitude towards books on webdesign is that they are probably outdated by the time you buy them. The lag time for publishing and marketing the book usually results in it being several months out of date by the time it hits the shelves of the bookstores. I prefer to look for articles on line targeting the exact question I am interested in. If you want general background info though, then books are probably your best bet. |
| I have found most of my needs satisfied by using free online tutorials and fixes. If you are starting off, though, a decent book is probably the way to go as it will get you going step by step to the point where the online tutorials will be meaningful. Most importantly, one can flip to the index to find something one has not used for a long time, much easier than trawling through a bunch of websites! There is still a lot to be said for a book one can hold in one's hand! |
| Another good approach is to get a subscription to Safari online. You pay a monthly fee and have access to all the Oreilly books and can even download some and print them out. It's a great resource. |
| For things like HTML and CSS that don't change too much for a long time I think books are great. There are other things in technology that change so fast though my books are outdated before I've finished them so then I prefer the tutorials. |
| I agree. I in fact I still use some HTML books from a few years back that constantly provide me with a quick refresher course when I'm looking for something I haven't used for some time. Even the sections on CSS are still pretty useful. |
