Can one be directed to an online location which teaches one how to hack properly? This would surprise me, but I am certain that such places actually exist on the web. Surely, one would be able to learn a whole lot more, simply from getting themselves involved in the grand scheme of things and learning directly from the source, instead of via some washed down version on the net.

By hacking I assume you mean to be a super-geek (something we discuss here) not how to be a criminal (something we don't discuss here).

My recommendation would be don't start with perl. Start with assembly language. You want to learn the true basics first.
